The Memorial to the Czech and Moravian victims of the Shoah in the Pinkas Synagogue

Prague 1, Czech Republic

The Memorial to the Czech and Moravian victims of the Shoah in the Pinkas Synagogue was opened to the public in 1960. The artistic concept was based on placing of all names of the victims on the walls. In 1992-1996, the inscriptions in the Pinkas Synagogue were restored and later digitized in preparation for the new exhibition. On the first floor of the synagogue, we placed an interactive information panel that allows visitors to find more information about the victims and at the same time find the location of the name on the synagogue wall. The Memorial and exhibition is one of the most visited buildings in Prague, around 600,000 visitors a year.

A new outdoor exhibition circuit was designed in addition to the existing exhibition of the Memorial Victims of the Shoah. From the reconstructed entrance vestibule with graphic guidance, leads visitors to the Pinkas Lane. Here are 7 stops of the exhibition "Journeys with No Return". Glass benches formation serve as an outdoor auditorium for lecturing. All three courtyards were reconstructed. On the 1st Courtyard there is an exhibition on a three-dimensional panel – "Transformation of the Synagogue into the Memorial " and "History of the Pinkas Synagogue". The panel is backlit, at night it is a beacon, started by a twilight sensor. A relaxation area with glass benches made of tempered glass was created in every courtyard. The design of all elements is anti-vandal, with multiple security systems. The main material of all elements of the exhibition and other objects is glass in various forms, contributing to the effect of the entire exhibition.

The transparent principle of clear glass is best expressed both in the Pinkas Synagogue and in the new exposition in the courtyards and outdoor areas. All the added elements are glass and serve as almost "invisible" information carriers - printing on glass, displays, or utility objects - benches or glazed panels heating.
